Music is a huge part of my life. It always has been. While writing, I have different playlists for books filled with songs to inspire certain scenes and emotions. So, I thought I would share the top 10 songs I associate with the first book in The Nihryst series and why.
If you’d like to see/listen to the whole playlist, click here!
- Never Let Me Go – Florence + the Machine
This was one of the first songs added to the playlist. I’ve always loved it, but it played with my music on shuffle when I was writing the first draft, and I just instantly felt like it fit the story and characters well.
- Legends Never Die – League of Legends ft. Against the Current
I feel like this one’s self-explanatory… she’s searching for immortals, aka lost legends. It’s also just a pretty epic song.
- Stubborn Love – The Lumineers
Ada and Lee are both extremely stubborn, but really I just love this song. It’s my favorite by The Lumineers, and it goes on all the playlists.
- War of Hearts – Ruelle
Alllllll the Ruelle songs!! It was hard narrowing it down to two for this list because I listen to her so much while writing, and I love them all. This one fits multiple ships in The Lost Legends because everyone’s falling in love with the “wrong” people.
- Heart by Heart – Demi Lovato
Once upon a time my friend, Stephanie, was like “You know what song reminds me of Ada and Lee? Heart by Heart by Demi Lovato,” and I almost cried. It is the song that plays during the greenhouse scene in the City of Bones movie… which is my favorite scene not only in the movie but the books as well. So, any connection whatsoever to my favorite series, I will take. But also, it’s just super accurate.
- Ocean Eyes – Billie Eilish
Went a little literal with this one. If you’ve read the first chapter or have even seen the cover, you get it. Loxley’s eyes are the color of the ocean.
- Cosmic Love – Florence + the Machine
Would I really be a YA author if I didn’t include this song? For real though, this song is perfect for a certain ship…
- The Fault in Our Stars – Troye Sivan
This is actually a song for a very specific part. Well, a few parts, but the one that comes to mind first is chapter 22.
- Where We Come Alive – Ruelle
I just really love this song… it’s my favorite actually. It also fits chapter 21-22, but I have it set near the end of the playlist for the last chapter. It leads into book two well for multiple reasons. Also, I want the lyrics “out of the shadows and into the light” as a tattoo.
- Nobody Knows – The Lumineers
This was a late add, but it is just too perfect not to be on the list. It also goes near the end for reasons. It’s just a wonderful song, so you should go listen to it.
Bonus, some mostly-instrumental songs from soundtracks:
I Don’t Think Now is the Best Time – Pirates of the Caribbean
Of course there are PotC songs on the playlist. Who do you think I am?
Courtyard Apocalypse – Harry Potter
A lot of Harry Potter music was on the list, but I removed some in the end. They’re still in the series writing playlist though!
An Unusual Prince – Sleeping Beauty
“I walked with you once upon a dream.” — Enough said. But also, it’s perfect for the series in many ways.
Tell Me Who You Are – Doctor Who
There is a LOT of music from Doctor Who on here, but this one is my favorite. There’s a lot of build up and emotion, which is good for writing certain scenes. It’s from the episode A Good Man Goes to War, which is a favorite, and this part always makes me cry. So, I channel those feelings while writing.
Waiting for the Lights – Tangled
It’s a Tangled retelling, so… duh!
