From the author of The Queen’s Rising comes a thrilling YA stand-alone fantasy about the unbreakable bond between sisters. Perfect for fans of Ember in the Ashes, Sky in the Deep, and Court of Fives.

After eight long years, Evadne will finally be reunited with her older sister, Halcyon, who has been proudly serving in the queen’s army. But when Halcyon appears earlier than expected, Eva knows something has gone terribly wrong. Halcyon is on the run, hunted by her commander and charged with murder.

Though Halcyon’s life is spared during her trial, the punishment is heavy. And when Eva volunteers to serve part of Halcyon’s sentence, she’s determined to find out exactly what happened. But as Eva begins her sentence, she quickly learns that there are fates much worse than death. synopsis from Goodreads

my thoughts

Ok, how can I say this… I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. Oh my gosh, you guys I wasn’t sure what to expect from it. If I’m honest it scared me a bit because I thought it was going to be an overly complex and dense fantasy book. But it wasn’t and thank god cause I don’t think my mood of the moment could’ve gone through with it.

Don’t get me wrong there is a lot of information in the book. It sets up a lot of the mythology that though it seems inspired by Ancient Greek myths is a God system that stands on its own. I loved learning about the Gods and their stories. Ancient Greece And Ancient Rome are two of my favourite time periods and I was so happy when I started Sisters of Sword and Song since it reminded me a lot of those eras.

The story focuses on two sisters: Evadne and Halcyon. Both are so different. Halcyon is the warrior that left her home as a child to go train in the legion. To her little sister, she is the strong one, the fearless one, the one that can conquer everything. Because Evadne has a limp due to an old injury she is always overlooked, taken for granted. But throughout the story, Evadne will find her strength and learn that what makes us different or what makes us appear weak to others might just be what makes us strong. It was so empowering to see Evadne come into her own. To step out of her sister’s shadow and start to see herself as a strong person. Both sisters were so relatable and you could truly see the bond and love that united them.

It is such a well-balanced stand-alone for a fantasy book. The pacing isn’t too fast that we are rushing to the finish line nor is it too slow that we feel as nothing occurs. The action happens exactly when it needs to and we are given just the right amount of information about the world that we don’t feel overwhelmed by all of it.

And let’s talk about the world-building for a moment. Wow, just wow! I still can’t believe this is a stand-alone. It just shows what a master Rebecca Ross is at it. She gave us such a rich world to travel to for a mere 432 pages. I already gushed over how the mythology was amazing but now I need to say how the setting was really brought to life for me. I could imagine the places that were described very easily. I was really immersed in the world. I hope we might get maybe a prequel or novella or something other that is set in this world from her.

Honestly, I couldn’t put the book down. I highly recommend picking Sisters of Sword and Song up. It is probably one of my favourite reads of the year.

Thank you to HarperTeen, Edelweiss and Fantastic Flying Book Club for providing an eArc in exchange for an honest review.
